About dormouse

The Dormouse Theatre is a 100 seat venue* that produces its own unique brand of sketch comedy, as well as original, and non-traditional works. In addition, The Dormouse hosts and produces an array of performance artists throughout the season.

The setting is relaxed with eclectic seating options. Patrons will be able to chill before and after a show, while enjoying beverages and house made snacks from our rotating menu. The building itself is a fixture of the Kalamazoo community, as the Dormouse team has repurposed a one hundred and thirty year old church building.

Well I’ll be! We are one week away from the opening of Rhinoceros.

The Dormouse Theatre is proud to present Rhinoceros, the absurdist masterpiece by Eugène Ionesco, with performances scheduled for April 25, 26 and May 2, 3, 2025. This timely and haunting production invites audiences to explore themes of conformity, identity, and resistance—served with a surreal twist and a dash of dark humor.
In a small, peaceful town, the unthinkable begins to happen: people are turning into rhinoceroses. As the transformation spreads, the townspeople struggle with fear, denial, and the pressure to conform. Only one man, Bérenger, holds out—determined to resist the charge. Written in the wake of fascist movements in mid-20th-century Europe, Rhinoceros remains chillingly relevant today.
Directed by Stephen Dupuie, this production brings Ionesco’s absurdist vision to life with bold staging, striking visuals, and a cast of dynamic local talent.

SILVER FOXES is a contemporary comedy taking place in a time worn but iconic mid-century Palm Springs home. The plot revolves around Chuck and Benny, two 60ish gay men, now ex-lovers, still figuring out their post-relationship relationship. While their buddy Jerry’s much younger lover is in town, they discover their oldest and dearest friend, Cecil, has been forced back into the closet while living in a homophobic independent living facility. This “chosen family” is forced to take charge of Cecil’s future in order to help him live out his life with pride and dignity. Thematically the play explores gentrification, home and body maintenance, and the realities of growing older at all ages in the LGBTQ+ community.
