The Dormouse Theatre is a 100 seat venue* that produces its own unique brand of sketch comedy, as well as original, and non-traditional works. In addition, The Dormouse hosts and produces an array of performance artists throughout the season.

The setting is relaxed with eclectic seating options. Patrons will be able to chill before and after a show, while enjoying beverages and house made snacks from our rotating menu. The building itself is a fixture of the Kalamazoo community, as the Dormouse team has repurposed a one hundred and thirty year old church building.

SILVER FOXES is a contemporary comedy taking place in a time worn but iconic mid-century Palm Springs home. The plot revolves around Chuck and Benny, two 60ish gay men, now ex-lovers, still figuring out their post-relationship relationship. While their buddy Jerry’s much younger lover is in town, they discover their oldest and dearest friend, Cecil, has been forced back into the closet while living in a homophobic independent living facility. This “chosen family” is forced to take charge of Cecil’s future in order to help him live out his life with pride and dignity. Thematically the play explores gentrification, home and body maintenance, and the realities of growing older at all ages in the LGBTQ+ community.

An iconic film that seamlessly blends romance, comedy, and political themes of Black queer oppression.

The wry, incisive debut feature by Cheryl Dunye gave cinema something bracingly new and groundbreaking: a vibrant representation of Black lesbian identity by a Black lesbian filmmaker. Dunye stars as Cheryl, a video-store clerk and aspiring director whose interest in forgotten Black actresses leads her to investigate an obscure 1930s performer known as The Watermelon Woman, whose story proves to have surprising resonances with Cheryl’s own life as she navigates a new relationship with a white girlfriend (Guinevere Turner). Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen, introducing an important voice in American cinema.

Doors at 6:30pm, pre-show at 7pm, and the feature will start at 7:30pm. Arrive early to grab popcorn and drinks, and to share recommendations with everyone.
